I like pretty things, I like to look pretty, and I don’t feel that I need to justify that preference. My logic is always that as long as I get things done, I can spend as much time as I want on myself, and why should that bother anyone? The truth is that I get more (productive) things done than most people, and of course, I understand that it gives people room to think that perhaps I could do even more. We can always do more, that’s why the modern people are just working to their graves. Me? I love my work (I really do!), but I don’t live for my work, I live for me. Period.
Ok, so after a long justification of not needing to justify, here is my new beauty device – ReFa Carat.
What it does (extracted from ReFa official website):
Feel kneading sensation of ReFa CARAT with its unique squeezing motion
The ReFa CARAT is designed to replicate the gentle pinching and kneading sensation that an Aesthetician might include as part of your treatment. These actions stimulate your skin and the muscles below and increase circulation. The ReFa CARAT works on your body such as:
- Jaw line
- Inner thigh
However, once you experience the feel of a ReFa CARAT treatment, you’ll want to use it all over. And you can! Try using your ReFa CARAT on your cheeks, calf, chest and more. You’ll see the same great results wherever you use your ReFa CARAT. Plus it’s waterproof so you can take it just about anywhere!
Before I invested hundreds of dollars into this device, I was deeply concerned of what had been said about the micro current causing reaction of sensitive skin. So, I bought a ‘copy’ which is not very cheap, it’s around S$50, and it is much tinier than the real thing.
No solar panel = no micro current
Small – because the roller is small, it can cause more bruising
It was however, quite a good tester, to get a feel of what to expect, and I kind of like the kneading and pinching.
In the Name of Vanity
And yes, this is what I do in the name of vanity. See, I developed a sudden fear of ageing. It’s a long story, but it’s got to do with the fact that people mistake me as a very ‘young’ woman; and I suddenly realised that while many people find that flattering, it could potentially turn out to be a scary thing for me! I may lose the benefit of ageing gracefully because of unrealistic expectation of the gap between my actual age and perceived age! I then attempted to ‘mature’ my appearance by having my hair permed, and for some strange reasons, people take another few more years off the already younger age.
Enough is Enough!
Anyway, I got tired of being fearful, and decide to embrace my ‘youthful’ genes! I might as well work on it to keep the youthful appearance for as long as it lasts! My mannerism may not have helped with maturity presentation too, but that is something perceived not portrayed, so I am just going to let that be. In spite of looking younger, our skin does succumb to the pull of gravity. Yes, our skin sags! I have smile lines that I really resent, it’s probably due to weight gain then weight loss then weight gain again (which can affect the elasticity of the skin), and of course, ageing.
Most importantly, I have water retention problem. I look bloated in the morning, always. I suspect it has something to do with humidity level in Singapore. I am less bloated when in drier climate countries.
I was considering between the NuSkin spa device and ReFa Carat. I decided with ReFa because I am not comfortable with the idea of using NuSkin’s skincare that has to be used with the spa device. I have crazy skin allergies, and by ‘crazy’, I mean unruly and rogue, it can react poorly with something that it once agreed with. ReFa is an independent ‘massaging’ device, so the result is not dependent on the skincare products.
What I do
You can watch the video on their website on the ‘how to’. Personally, I rolled along the jawline (up and down) 10 times on each side. Then, I rolled nearing to end of my cheeks (up and down) 10 times on each side. Then, I rolled up along the apple of my cheek, 10 times on each side.
I massaged on my arms and hands in the evening, and I really enjoyed it. I crochet for hours, and the device really relieves the aching muscles.
Verdict After 2.5 Weeks
I noticed a subtle change, a sharper chin and leaner cheeks, but it’s very subtle, so I dismissed that as a psychological perception. It is until I put the photos side by side for comparison! Tell me, do you see any difference? The photos at the bottom row were taken last month when I permed my hair and tried out the curlers, and the one at top right side was taken last year after I rebonded my hair.
After this photo comparison, I became more enthusiastic in using the ReFa! I should try using on my tummy and thighs!
It’s important to note that when you use the ReFa Carat, you don’t cover the solar panel. My only gripe about this device is the position of the solar panel. Perhaps it should be located higher or perhaps have a handle that is longer. It’s hard to grab the handle and exert strength in rolling without covering the solar panel.
The Determining Factor in Buying Decision
When researching between the NuSkin and ReFa devices, I looked up many videos. This particular video (no longer available) was the determining factor for me to go with ReFa. The instant result of the skin being lifted and tightened, and eyes widened, that was the ‘wow’ factor! That’s why I included that ‘pull up’ step in my routine too. 😛
This is not a magic device, it doesn’t reverse time and ageing. Similar to the NuSkin spa device, consistent use is the key. The micro current helps to ‘bloat’ up the cells under the skin so that the skin looks more supple; a function that is lost with age. Face massage and shaping techniques have been around for ages, this device just makes it more effective, but you have to do it regularly. I have no problem with that, since I actually like the kneading part, even for the face, the muscle actually aches. I suspect that it helps to relieve tension too.
I bruise very easily, and I am considerably fair (NC15 profile) for South East Asians, so when I bruise, it is very obvious. I don’t really care, since I injure myself so frequently that I find it odd when I don’t have a cut or bruise. So, use with caution.
